Denver Marathon Training: Week 2

June 3, 2012

Week 2 is complete!

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about my first marathon, since it was one year ago TODAY that I completed my first 26.2 race.

In looking back at that race I’ve been thinking about all the things I wish I could have changed or done differently during my training to have a stronger race. And now that I’ve been through it once, I know now what to do and what not to do.

This time around I plan to

-stretch and foam roll after every run
-not go crazy on eating (I gained 10 pounds last time)
-ice my knees
-stay committed to the easy runs (balls to the wall training every day is no bueno)
-wear compression socks after long runs

This week’s runs went really well. I am having some twinging pain in my right knee, which is the knee I’ve had surgery one before, some I’m trying to take care of it as best as I can by icing it and applying some Icy Hot at night. I’m debating whether or not to get a knee brace, and haven’t yet made up my mind.

Taking care of yourself can sometime be a pain. I know I always want to just jump in the shower, or am in a hurry to eat, or get ready for my day. But stretching, icing, foam rolling are extremely important when training. So I’m committing myself to taking care of my body and muscles this time around.

Total mileage this week: 21
Total time: 3 hours 12 minutes

Long run splits
Mile 1: 10:29
Mile 2: 8:44
Mile 3: 8:38
Mile 4: 9:50
Mile 5: 8:40
Mile 6: 8:31
Mile 7: 10:34
Mile 8: 8:46

I think it is so neat that you are training for a marathon! I am training for a half marathon and it’s been great so far. I really need to start icing my knees…

It’s also great how you can run and then not feel so bad about eating all the baked goods you make 🙂

Good job on the run!
I also need to make sure I roll out.. it’s so easy to skip it, but the pain that comes from not rolling sucks!
