It’s amazing how much a baby can grow in a week.
And I don’t mean physically, I mean mentally. This week Logan hit a bunch of milestones all at once and I am just in awe.
Our biggest achievement this week? Logan can PUT HIMSELF TO SLEEP!! Oh my gawd! I cannot even begin to tell you how incredible it is. So last week I was laying Logan down in the crib and rubbing his belly while keeping the pacifier in his mouth and he would drift off to sleep after 5 or 10 minutes. That lasted for a few days, then he got smart. He knew I was gonna stay there with him until he fell asleep, so he started playing with me. Instead of getting drowsy he was getting more alert with me in the room. He would start bringing his hands up to my face, blowing against the pacifier, or just plain out laughing. One night I just decided I wasn’t gonna be played a fool. I feed him, changed him, bundled him up in his magic sleep suit, rubbed his belly and sang Twinkle Twinkle twice. A few kisses and I love you’s, and that was it. I walked out.
By walking out I was committing to starting sleep training. I told Lucas when I got in the living room to be prepared for crying and screaming. We watched the monitor, dreading what the night was going to have in store for us.
Logan wiggled his arms about, brought his feet up and down, and cooed for 10 minutes. Then his head fell to the side and he was asleep. Not a single cry! I was shocked!!! It almost felt to good to be true. I tried the same routine the next day with his naps and the same thing happened. I have only had two or three times now in the last FOUR days where I’ve put him down and he’s cried. I wait 5 minutes [he has to be crying hard] and I go in and rub his belly for a minute and walk back out. At this point if he continues to cry, I go in at 10 minute intervals. But he never makes it to that first 10 minute mark, he always falls asleep.
I feel so free now! I know that now when I go to put him down it’s no longer a wonder of how long I’ll be back in his room with him. And now that he can put himself to sleep he’s actually sleeping longer for naps and through the night. I LOVE IT!!!
The other big milestones he’s hit this week are finding is toes. He’s obsessed with them. He especially loves to grab his right big toe and yank on it. He’s trying to hard to get it in his mouth but can’t reach it all the way yet. And since he can grab his toes it’s helping him start to rock, so he’s able to roll over to one side now. It’s the cutest thing. He pulls so hard on his feet that it just pulls his body sideways.
One of our friends let us borrow their Baby Einstein Activity Chair and he is all about it! He loves to bang on all the little pieces and try to get everything in his mouth. It’s so incredible to watch him sitting in the chair completely upright and moving around towards the different toys. He just seems so big and grown up all the sudden. I can barely remember him as that tiny 3 week old baby. How can your mind so quickly forget those things. Sad face.
We have our 4 month check up on Friday and I’m super excited to see how much this guy weighs. I think he’s close to 23 pounds! WTF!! [6 month clothes are starting to get a little tight now…and I just traded in all my size 3 diapers for size 4].
Everything Logan does melts my heart, but I had an extra special moment with him last night. I was laying him down in the crib and I always get close to his face to tell him I love him and give him kisses. So, while I was doing this he reached his little hands up to my cheeks, so slowly and gently, and looked right in my eyes and baby babbled something that sounded like I love you. My eyes teared up instantly. It was the most precious thing ever. This is what being a parent is all about.
