Kid Activity – Cloud Dough

August 21, 2017

You’re going to think this sounds crazy, giving kids flour to play with. And honestly, it kind of is, but if this is what bring almost an hour and a half of quiet play, then I’m all for it.

We’ve made cloud dough now twice, and it’s such a big hit. The first time we made it, the kids played in the kitchen with it. Yes it was everywhere, but honestly the clean up was pretty quick. I just got out the vacuum to suck it all up. The next time I moved us out on to the porch, now that the weather is cooling down and it’s not as miserable to be sitting out in the desert afternoon. That clean up was way easier. A few squirts of the hose and it was gone.

What I love about this is that
1. It’s so super easy to make and you already have the ingredients for it
2. Both kids, ages 4 and 1, can play
3. Imagination gets to run wild

In the bin I put certain things for Holly, like cookie cutters, scoops, funnels. Things that were easy enough for her to play with and use. And then Logan had certain things like his whole Thomas the Train set. Kid you not. That’s how the flour started to go everywhere. He was flouring bombing the train while it was choo-chooing. And then Holly started to just scoop flour and purposefully dump it on the floor. But to see both of them play and laugh and actually be somewhat quiet for an extended period of time was heaven for me.

I used on big plastic storage bin to mix up the cloud dough in. And then when I saw them dumping it on the floor, and wanting to drive trains through it, I gave them a baking sheet to do that on [trying to condense the mess].

If you need a quick and easy activity, this is for you!

Cloud Dough:
2 cups flour
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 drops lavender oil [this is optional, but it helped in keeping the mood calm. And we only use Young Living essential oils, because they’re 100% pure and safe for little people’s skin]

Mix together in a bowl, and you’re done! You can also double this recipe for more dough.
