Wellness Wednesday

August 23, 2017

Laundry, laundry, laundry.

I feel like that’s all I do! Every day the churning of the washer and the hum of the dryer has become a “normal” noise in our house. It’s practically routine now for me to wake up, get breakfast going, and start the washing machine.

Anyone else living this life? Man, I can only imagine when my kids grow a little more and we start to add in school clothes, gym clothes, cheerleading outfits, football gear, and my old lady granny panties [because by that time, I’ll be an old lady].

I know it seems random to think of laundry on Wellness Wednesday, but it’s totally not. Think about it. What’s one thing that we have on alllllll day long. Our clothes!! The shower is the only time [ maybe and hopefully 😉 ] that we don’t have our clothes on. Oh, and I guess those few times when the headache excuse didn’t make the cut, if you get what I’m saying.

So, wouldn’t it make sense to want to make sure that our clothes are rubbing off on us, literally. Let’s talk dryer sheets for a minute. Dryer Sheets are probably the most toxic item in your home! Let me show you.

7 Toxic Reasons To Ditch Dryer Sheets | healthylivinghowto.com
Here are the seven most common chemicals found in dryer sheets and their effect on the central nervous system:

1. Alpha-Terpineol causes central nervous system disorders. Can also cause loss of muscular coordination, central nervous system depression, and headache.
2. Benzyl Alcohol causes central nervous system disorders, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, central nervous system depression, and, in severe cases, death.
3. Camphor on the US EPA’s Hazardous Waste list. Central nervous system stimulant, causes dizziness, confusion, nausea, twitching muscles, and convulsions.
4. Chloroform on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list. Neurotoxic and carcinogenic.
5. Ethyl Acetate on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list. Narcotic. May cause headaches and narcosis (stupor).
6. Linalool causes central nervous system disorders. In studies of animals, it caused ataxic gait (loss of muscular coordination), reduced spontaneous motor activity, and depression.
7. Pentane causes headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. Repeated inhalation of vapours causes central nervous system depression.
Yikes!!! Right?! Even worse – your dryer sheets are not likely to list the ingredients, as they aren’t required to.

So, now you’re thinking, well what can I do about dryer sheets — You can use BALLS! Wool dryer balls. Who has some? Who needs some?! You can buy these anywhere – Amazon, Target, Etsy. These are a natural way to help get static out, dry your laundry faster, and make it smell good, where you actually control the scent!

We love using essential oils, you just put your oils right on the dryer balls. We love using lavender, rosemary, or lemongrass. Other options – Purification, Thieves, orange or lemon or your other favorites! There’s no right or wrong oil to put, and that’s what so great about this, is that I can choose my scent, based on my mood, and know that it is a super safe option for my family.
